Lodz - the cradle of Polish cinema PDF Print E-mail

Lodz has a special place in the history of Polish cinema. For many years feature, educational and cartoon film production has been based here. Every December CamerImage Festival, the International Festival of the Art of Cinematography is held in Lodz, attracting renowned film-makers, students and cinema goers from all over the world.

Lodz is also home to famous National Film, Television and Theatre School.

Cinema tour in Lodz:


1. National Film, Television and Theatre School

School is seated in the once O. Kon palace. It is proud of its graduates, as their names stand for themselves - Andrzej Wajda, Roman Polanski, Jerzy Skolimowski, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Marek Piwowski, to mention just a few.

2. Lodz Walk of Fame
Walking long Piotrkowska Street - between Moniuszko Street and Rubinstein Passage - you will find the star-plaques with the names of the brightest stars in Polish cinema.

3. Museum of Cinematography

Museum displays a permanent exhibition of items representative of variuos stages of the advancement of film technology and organises temporary expositions related for instance to the latest film productions. It is situated in Karol Scheibler's Palace.

4. Opus Film
29 Lakowa Street/ ul. Lakowa 29
the former Feature Film Producion studio, it is now the leading Polish film and TV producer. Inside the modern building there is also an art gallery.

5. Teatr Wielki
Dabrowskiego Square/ Plac Dabrowskiego
every year in December the main Lodz theater becomes a meeting place for most famous cinematographers, as the most important gigs of CamerImage Festival take place there.

Apart from these venues, you may find interesting visiting one of may Lodz cinemas. Depending on what you looking for, you may choose between multiplex cinemas such as Silverscreen on Pilsudskiego Street or Cinema City in Manufaktura and smaller places such as Polonia cinema on Piotrkowska, Baltyk on Narutowicza Street, just to mention those downtown.
