The Christmas Eve Supper - Wigilia PDF Print E-mail

Christmas Table DecorationThe evening of Christmas Eve (24th December) in Poland is traditionally the most festive and moving evening of the year. It is the culmination of the advent experience for Christian families.
The word for Christmas Eve in Polish, Wigilia, comes from the Latin for “keeping watch”. According to an old Church tradition, on the day before a major celebration people would fast and the faithful would stay up all night, praying together.

Children singing carolsAs there is less and less time till Christmas, it might be worth reminding about one of many Polish Christmas traditions, which is Carol Singing. This tradition is not exclusively Polish but, in oposition to some other countries, it is still alive and very popular indeed.  Below you can find some of the carols, like world famous "Silent Night" but in Polish version.  Many of them though are regional and known only in Poland. Christmas card (macstudio.wroc.pl)Although Wigilia/Christmas Eve supper has deep religious meaning, it is not free from superstitions! The one that there should be an even number of people around the table at the Christmas Eve supper is one of the strongest ones, still very often respected in Poland. An odd number of people means that one of them will have bad luck.

Christmas homemade table decorationAs this year’s Christmas time is approaching rapidly, public primary and secondary schools, along with many public institutions and private companies, are preparing to celebrate it. It is a long-established tradition that few, or any, lessons take place on the last school day prior to Christmas. 
Students are not questioned or tested, and by mid-morning they meet their class teacher in their classroom. Wishes are exchanged, holy wafer is broken and everyone sits down for a meal of red borsch and meat pie. Carols are sometimes listened to or sung and, after a while, the students leave for home, having spent this time on friendly chatting.
Then begins the second part of the celebration, and it has in most cases one of the two forms.
