Smingus Dyngus - Polish Easter tradition

Easter DecorationsŚmingus Dyngus (an Easter Monday tradition which exists to this day).
Every Polish person remembers those Easter Mondays when they would lie in bed and their friends or family poured water on them. The greatest victory was catching someone in bed, unconsciously awaiting their watery surprise! But another great part of the day was going to church or visiting relatives – getting together in groups with buckets and water pistols, making sure that no one missed out on a soaking!

Stanislaw Lem: A Celebration in Alfreton

The Eastern Bloc's answer to Philip. K. Dick? The forefather of sci-fi comedy? The inventor of virtual reality, nanotech-warfare, eBooks, The Sims computer game... etc, etc. Stanislaw Lem has many titles, accolades, and credits, but his influence is felt more widely than his name is known.

Song of the Legions by Michael Large

An epic fight for survival in the age of Napoleon -

“Stanislaus-August Poniatowski, by the Grace of God and the Will of the People, Elected King of the Republic of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, Ruthenia, Prussia, Mazowia, Samogita, Kiev, Wolyn, Podolia, Podlasie, Livonia, Smolensk, Sever and Czernihov...” Et cetera!

This was Stanislaus-August. Amongst his subjects he was called ‘the Bullock,’ so named for his emblem, a red calf, on his coat of arms. Lamentably, he is known to history as the Last King of Poland. Poor, foolish Poniatowski! An empty, windy creature, redolent of macassar, with a soft stomach and a head full of French books and nonsense.

The Marzanna - Say Goodbye to Winter

With the nights drawing out, and the harsh winter gradually fading into the past, our thoughts turn to the coming spring, and, as is customary, the Polish Saturday School in Tiverton is making plans for the traditional ceremony which welcomes the arrival of the new season, or, more accurately, bids a defiant, if slightly irreverent, farewell to the old one.
